Staff and students at Darrick Wood School in Orpington are celebrating after winning an international radio drama award for one of their extra-curricular media projects. In January 2018 the school set up an audio blog to post weekly content including audio plays, short stories, original music and podcasts recorded by its pupils. Two of their plays were included in the UK International Radio Drama Festival that was held in Canterbury last week (18th-22nd March).
Now in its fifth year, the annual event hosted five days of live listening of radio/audio plays drawn from 18 different countries and presented in 15 different languages. This year’s event attracted over 60 entries ranging in length from a couple of minutes to a full hour. Darrick Wood’s short play, ONE OF OUR EXERCISE BOOKS IS MISSING, won the short form category and was chosen by a jury of discerning radio listeners chaired by acclaimed radio actor Jonathan Keeble. The festival is notable for being the UK’s only radio drama festival, bringing audio drama from a range of languages and cultural styles to a UK audience as well as recognising emerging international independent producers.
