With Safety Internet Day 2019 marked around the world on Tuesday, assemblies this week focused on how we can keep safe on the internet. Head of IT and Computing, Mr Leslie, presented ideas to consider when posting and sharing on the internet as well raising awareness of checking the terms and conditions when signing up for apps and social media. Do we sometimes give consent for companies to share our posts and images without realising it? Further information including support for parents can be found at https://www.saferinternet.org.uk/safer-internet-day/2019.
On Wednesday evening, we were fortunate to be able to offer parents/carers the opportunity to attend a presentation entitled “The Adolescent Brain”. We are aware that due to the short notice of the event there are parents/carers who were unable to attend and we plan to ask the providers to return and run further sessions in the future. Although there are no resources we can share from the presentation, parents/carers can access resources about mindfulness through www.headspace.com. The providers have also presented to our current Year 12 students and the topics covered feature as part of Form Time and PSHE activities.
Also on Wednesday evening parents of pupils in Year 9 attended a presentation on what is offered in Key Stage 4 science. Many also stayed to experience practical lessons in Biology, Chemistry or Physics. We are grateful to the Science Faculty for their hard work in ensuring that this annual event was once again a big success. It is traditionally the start of a number of evening events for parents of Year 9 pupils as the KS4 options process gets underway.
On Thursday, we held our second ever Alumni Day. Former students were treated to a trip down memory lane when viewing old photographs and school prospectuses and meeting long standing members of staff. There was also a presentation on our trip to China arranged for Easter. Pupils from the Music Department performed and lunch was prepared and served by pupils in the Food Technology Department. Perhaps the best part of the day however was the chance for some of our Year 9 pupils to meet Darrick Wood alumni to find out about their lives since school and in particular their chosen career paths.
A reminder that due to staff training, there will be an early closure on Thursday, 14th February with Years 11, 12 and 13 being dismissed at 1.15pm and Years 7 to 10 having lunch and then being dismissed at 2.00pm. School will start and finish at the usual time on Friday, 15th February.
A number of school trips are planned over the half term break. The Upper School Ski Trip departs on Friday, 15th February for the half term week, the Drama trip to Paris departs on Saturday, 16th February for four days and the Year 12 Geography Fieldtrip to Dorset leaves for four days on Sunday, 24th February. We wish them all a safe journey and hope they enjoy their experiences.
