Parent Bulletin 25/11/22

This week

Year 11 have completed their first week of mock examinations. We have been very impressed with how they have conducted themselves throughout, getting into the routines that are required for the smooth running of these examinations – remembering the equipment they need, the venues to be at on time and the rules of the exam hall/room. Arranging exams on this scale is a major operation for all schools but at Darrick Wood, we benefit from an experienced and highly skilled team of staff who can never be praised enough for their hard work.

Assemblies this week focused on the theme of good and evil. Examples from literature, stage and screen were compared with the real world to encourage reflection on the decisions and moral dilemmas we face in life. It concluded that aiming to be respectful and kind to others, whatever actions and words they use towards us, is always the best path to take.

Pathways 2022

Over 450 guests were welcomed to our Pathways 2022 careers event on Thursday evening. From the comments made on the night it was clear this was a very helpful event for pupils in Years 10-13. We hope all that attended now have a clearer idea of what path they may take in the future, or at least are now armed with lots of exciting ideas. Many thanks to all of exhibitors and all involved in organising the evening, especially our Pathways and Work Experience Coordinator, Mrs Collier.

Children in Need 2022

Thank you to all who gave so generously for Children in Need events in school. A total of £840 has been raised including from the Year 10 bake sale on Tuesday. Well done to all involved. This puts the total raised for charities this academic year so far at £2616.95. Thank you!

Christmas Card Competition

Congratulations to our winner and runners up in the Year 7 Christmas Card competition, organised annually by the Art Department. There is now a wonderful display outside the Art classrooms. Certificates and badges were presented in the Year 7 assembly and the winning design, by Eva Kidd, will be printed and used by Dr Airey when sending Christmas cards to colleagues in other schools and other important school contacts.

Visiting artist

Sixth Form and Art Club students enjoyed the opportunity to participate in a visiting artist soap carving workshop on Tuesday. Some of their carvings are shown below:

DWS Audio

In case you missed them, on DWS Audio there are three new dramas written and performed by some of our current Year 9 pupils. Each play imagines a scenario in which a group of characters are trapped in a place of isolation, cut off from the wider world. You can listen here: Isolated Spaces – DWS Audio (

A new club has also been launched which is dedicated to making audio content and podcasts. It meets every Friday lunchtime in Mr Chappell’s room (EN10). All are welcome to attend.

Finally, more episodes of our audio drama serial ROUGH DIAMONDS were broadcast this week on Leo Ulph’s Upload show on BBC Radio Kent. You can catch up with the episodes via BBC Sounds, which is also embedded on the DWS Audio blog. You can access it here: DWS Audio (  Katie Walter, who starred as Nancy in Oliver plays one of the lead roles!

Pinewood Studio

On Friday, 18th November the Year 13 Film Studies class had the exciting opportunity to visit Pinewood Studio on their Futures Festival. After a very early start to get the coach, the day involved meeting with lots of professionals from all over the industry including Sound Technicians, Lighting directors, Make-up artists, Producers and Camera workers to name just a few.  There were plenty of opportunities for the students to try the cameras and equipment out and even become a presenter on a green screen.  We had many talks and workshops within various areas in the industry and lots of contacts were made by all.  We even got our pictures taken with some very iconic Star Wars characters!  A very worthwhile and fun day was had by all. Thank you to Mrs Iddiols-Bunclark for arranging the trip.

In assemblies this week pupils were reminded about road safety, especially as the evenings become darker and because we have seen too many cross the road whilst distracted by their mobile phones. We would appreciate it if parents/carers could re-enforce this message at home. Please also avoid driving near to the School gates, turning in the entrance to the School or parking without consideration for our neighbours.
