Parent Bulletin 09/09/22
Queen Elizabeth II
Students and staff arriving at school today (Friday) were greeted by the Union flag flying at half-mast as the nation enters a period of mourning and reflection on the life of Queen Elizabeth II. Whilst reactions to the news that broke on Thursday evening will vary from person to person, for many in our school community, this time may feel upsetting and strange and we will do our best to come together as a community to support each other. The Queen has been a constant in our ever changing lives and it seems almost incomprehensible to imagine the future without her. In registration this morning, students will have had the opportunity to reflect on the life of the Queen and consider how she inspired others through her devotion to the country she served all her life. We also held a minute’s silence at midday and a brief message has been placed on our website. In line with the protocols for such an event, we will keep our communication brief and informative, mostly only providing information we feel is essential for the smooth running of the School during this time.
We await further news from the Department of Education as to whether the Queen’s passing will have any implications for schools. Students should attend as usual. Should there be a bank holiday, then schools would close on that day.
First full week
It is clear that parents and carers have gone to a great deal of trouble to ensure students are dressed in accordance with our uniform policy, equipped fully for learning and are clear about what time students should be in school. Thank you. If there is anything unclear or you have any questions, your first point of contact should be your child’s Form Tutor. Simply contact the Office and they will forward it to them, or write a note in your child’s planner. More in depth enquiries will be passed to the relevant teacher, member of the pastoral team, or if necessary, member of the Senior Leadership Team. Thank you for your support in ensuring we have consistent practices at the start of a new school year. These will support all children to be successful at Darrick Wood School. A copy of our Communications Policy can be found on our website.
Open Evening 2022
In order to facilitate preparations for our Year 6 Open Evening on Wednesday, 5th October, students will finish early at 12.30pm. The following day, Thursday, 6th October, there will be a later start, with students expected ready to enter the buildings at 9.50am.
PE Clubs – winter timetable
The PE Department has published its winter Clubs timetable. This can be found on our website here. This covers PE clubs only. A full programme of all our clubs and societies will be published very soon.
A second hand uniform sale is planned for Saturday, 24th September. More details to follow.
Your attention is also drawn to the email sent home regarding a Quiz Night on Friday, 7th October from 7.00pm -10.00pm. The PSFA extends a warm invitation to all to help make this a success – the first of many we hope. Whether you rate yourself as an enthusiastic amateur or a budding Chaser, please come along and join in the fun. Professional quizmaster Mark Brenson will host and entertain you for the evening.
There is a maximum of 8 people per team. Each team can be a combination of parents, family, friends, neighbours, work colleagues, etc. Smaller numbers can be put together on the night if needed so that everyone gets to participate.
This event is strictly for those aged 18 and over. Tickets are £6 per person. Please bring your own drink and nibbles. It will be held in the Main Hall at School, with parking available onsite.
