Parent Bulletin 17/09/21

This week

Life at school continues to feel a little nearer the ‘normal’ we remember pre-2020. We have held assemblies for students in Years 7 to 11. Years 7, 12 and 13 have had team building days, which seem to have gone very well. Assemblies have focussed not just on the start of a new academic year, expectations and values but also on one of our big priorities of the year – the environment. The aim will be to reduce the use of single-use plastic, reduce waste, increase recycling and improve the outside spaces at the School. All students should now be bringing to school a suitable container for water drinking, refraining from bringing into school single-use plastic bottles and thinking more carefully about their purchases and the impact they may have. We have a long way to go on this journey but I aim for it to be one which brings the whole school community together with a common goal. Please be aware sugary drinks (e.g. Coke, Lucozade) and drinks with caffeine are not allowed at school.

Our Senior Prefect team have consulted different groups of students and staff to help design a new garden in the School  grounds. The ground selected is a piece of waste ground, not currently used, near to our Year 9 playground and Learning Hub rooms. This is being cleared in preparation for construction/planting of the garden (see below).

Continuing with the nature theme, in the afternoon today we became aware of wasps or bees in the vicinity of the Barker Building and we had to cordon off one of our pathways used by students. Pest control were called and attended very quickly. They confirmed they were in fact honey bees and were hopeful they would move on over the weekend. If not, we have already had one offer from someone who can collect them for their hives!

World Class Schools Award

Students who last year were involved in helping the School be re-accredited with the World Class Schools Award have had their photo taken next to the new plaque in Main Reception. Congratulations especially to runner-up Student of the Year, Bea, but to all our world class students.

COVID-19 vaccinations for children and young people aged 12 to 15 years

An email has been sent to parents/carers of students who are eligible to receive a covid vaccination in school.  Vaccination will not take place without consent being given using the form accessed from the NHS letter attached to the email. The School is unable to advise on the vaccination programme, it merely provides the venue should consent be given. Any queries should be directed to hrch.schoolcovid19vaccine@nhs.net or telephone 0208 614 5306. Vaccinations for those who have consented are likely to begin towards the end of next week.

Open Evening

Please see the email that has been sent regarding the early closure of the School on Wednesday, 6th October (12.30pm) and the slightly later start on Thursday, 7th October (9am). There are limited spaces at the event so if you know someone whose child is due to apply for a place for September 2022, please let them know this on and tell them to go to the link on our website to book a (free) ticket.

Year 11 Parent Information Evening

We have designed this event to be at school with a presentation to parents/carers of Year 11 students in the Hall followed by a choice of workshops. Information on how to book for this event was sent out today.

School photographs – Thursday, 23rd September

The previous date advertised for these was 1st October. This was incorrect. They are Thursday, 23rd September and for Years 7, 9 and 12 only at this stage. Please see the recent email from Mr Smith. We apologise for any confusion caused as we continue to re-introduce aspects of school life that were on hold during the past 18 months.

Reminders

Please check your child has all the equipment required to be a successful learner at school. If they respond that yes, they have a pen, that is insufficient. They need all their equipment and not just a pen.

All students are now required to wear their lanyard around school. Most are doing this correctly. We advise they keep this in their bag when at home so they do not forget it on a day they have their PE kit on.
