Parent Bulletin 06.12.19

This week

In assemblies this week we considered why we should seize every opportunity in life. The amazing story of 80 year old Julia Albu and her 9000 mile journey from South Africa to London in her 20 year old Toyota was used to illustrate this point perfectly. Her one year journey made the news at the time and those wanting to know more can find lots of information about it by searching for Julia Albu on the internet (e.g. http://www.bbc.com/travel/story/20180718-from-africa-to-tea-with-the-queen).

Year 11 have now completed their mock examinations and regardless of the outcome we would like to say well done to them for their conduct and effort in completing this intense period of examinations. Their mock results will be given to them on the afternoon of Monday, 6th January.

Coming up

On Friday, 13th December we will be encouraging students and staff to take part in the national Christmas jumper day in support of Save the Children. Our usual uniform/dress code may be altered with a Christmas jumper or one item which is Christmas themed or coloured ). There is not an expectation for students to unnecessarily purchase new jumpers – an item such as a green or red jumper or shirt they already own, or a Christmas tie would be allowed instead. They could swap their old Christmas jumper with a friend or they could decorate a jumper to be Christmas themed. Students will pay £1, all of which will go to Save the Children.

On the last day of term we will again be raising money for charity. Form Charity Reps will decide which charity over the coming days). This will be through a non-uniform day. If students do not want to take part, that is fine, but all are welcome to contribute £1 or more to the students’ chosen charity.  The school day will be altered as usual at the end of the autumn term. School will start at the normal time of 8.35. Students in Years 11 and Sixth Form will finish from midday and other year groups will finish from 1pm onwards once their Achievement Coordinators are happy that their rooms are tidy.

Our annual Carol Service will once again be held at St. Paul’s Church, Crofton on Tuesday, 17th December at 7.30pm. The PSFA will be providing mince pies and mulled wine. Our Carol Service is always a wonderful way to get into the Christmas spirit. Our choirs and musicians provide a high quality mix of carols and other festive pieces whilst our readers outline the Christmas story. Parents, students and friends of the School are all very welcome.

8YD are organising a food bank collection. Please see below for more information. There is also a ‘reverse advent calendar’ that could be used.

We hope many students will be able to help make a real success of this initiative.

Reminders and help required

We would appreciate your support in reinforcing with our students that our behaviour policy, school rules and uniform/dress code expectations remain in force to and from school and not just whilst in school. Whilst we regularly receive exellent reports from members of the public where students from Darrick Wood have been behaving brilliantly and in line with our values, supporting members of the local community where needed, we have also unfortunately had to speak to a minority about our expecations when in school uniform to and from school. Thank you for your help with this.

We politely remind parents/carers not to use the entrance to the School’s driveway as a turning area.
