Our annual Sports Awards evening enabled us to recognise the achievements of our students across a range of sports through the year. After giving out the awards, our Guest of Honour, England Sevens player Femi Sofolarin, shared his inspiring journey through multiple sports before finally focusing and excelling in rugby. The evening ended with refreshments made by pupils from the Food Technology Department who demonstrated excellent hospitality skills.
Training Teachers for 25 years
On Monday, the latest graduation ceremony for trainee teachers was held by the Bromley Schools’ Collegiate. It is excellent to see there are high quality teachers being employed across Bromley’s schools over the years ahead at a time when nationally there is a teacher shortage. On Wednesday, Dr Airey and other staff joined colleagues from many schools and those recently retired to celebrate 25 years of the Collegiate. One aspect of being a Teaching School is that we help train teachers. We do this through the Bromley Schools’ Collegiate. Anyone thinking of training to be a teacher should look no further than contacting us to discuss the different routes and we can help guide them to school-based training offered through the Bromley Schools’ Collegiate.
Nanya School, China
From Monday we will be joined by 27 students and 3 staff from Nanya School in China. This will be the School’s third visit to Darrick Wood. Parents/Carers may recall that at Easter a small group of students and staff from Darrick Wood travelled to Nanya and we are very much looking forward to welcoming them back to our school to attend our lessons and get an idea of how education works in the UK.
On the visit at Easter they presented us with numerous gifts including this wonderful painting which has now been framed and placed in our new Dining Hall just in time for their return visit. We have further plans to improve the decoration in the Dining Hall but this is certainly a stand out feature and far better than the plain walls we have had until now.
English Schools Athletics Championships
We have just heard that Benjamin Platt (Year 9) who was selected for Kent in the English Schools Athletics Championships today won the Silver Medal, equalling his lifetime best of 3.50m. He very narrowly missed 3.60m – having fractionally cleared the bar, the strong tail-wind blew the pole back onto the bar, knocking it off a couple of seconds after the clearance!
We also hear that former student Will Fuller is this weekend competing for Great Britain in the Under-23 European Athletics Championships 5000m. The event is being shown on Europsport and live on https://athletics.eurovisionsports.tv/event/30/european-athletics-u23-championships-gavle/calendar/2 – 7pm, Saturday (UK time).
